Poh reveals birthday plans for her big 5-0

Aside from her cooking skills, MasterChef's Poh Ling Yeow is also known for her “ageless beauty” and this year, the beloved cook is gearing up for a double celebration.

“My 50th birthday falls close to Christmas, and my dad wants to combine the two celebrations this year,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle.

Poh told the publication that she opted to merge her birthday celebration and Christmas festivities in an effort to make the holiday season “stress-free” for her and her loved ones.

“The key to a stress-free Christmas is reducing your personal workload, and I can’t think of a better way to get into the festive spirit than sharing preparations for the big day with family. It’s always potluck at the Yeow family Christmas!”

And as you'd expect from a seasoned chef, this year's menu consists of a few of her own “centrepiece mains”.

Her other tip for reader's at home hoping to make Christmas more stress-free is to ask guests to bring a side or dessert.

“I love a grated beet, chickpea and mint salad with white balsamic that’s full of crunch and almost like a pickle,” she said.

"Also, a Thai roast chicken and glass vermicelli salad, and a Korean japchae (sweet potato noodle salad).

“My family, bless them, loves a proper retro trifle. It starts with making finger jello by adding 1 tablespoon of powdered gelatine to a raspberry or strawberry jelly so you can easily cut them into cubes after it’s set."

She then shared her tip for making the trifle.

“Then it’s just a matter of layering sliced, store-bought jam rollettes drowned in regular strawberry jelly mixture, tinned peaches, fresh strawberries, custard made with powdered custard mix, fresh cream then piling on the prepared jelly cubes.”

Images: Yahoo Lifestyle

Poh Ling Yeow reveals heartbreaking loss

Warning: This article contains content which some readers may find distressing.

Celebrity chef Poh Ling Yeow has shared an update that no pet owner ever wants to face: her Scottish terrier, Rhino, has passed away.

“My li’l Rhinoceros is gone,” she wrote on Instagram - where Rhino and his brother, Tim, were frequent feature stars - alongside two pictures of her beloved dog. In the first, Poh was holding her furry friend’s paw, and the second showed Rhino’s grave - complete with blanket, ribbons, and scattered flowers.

The news came just months after Rhino was diagnosed with sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS). According to Melbourne Eye Vet, SARDS is “a retinal disorder of unknown cause that results in an acute onset of permanent blindness in adult dogs. Affected dogs are typically middle aged to older, and all breeds can be affected.”

At the time, Poh had opened up about their “new normal”, explaining how Rhino had been diagnosed after “many weeks of peculiar behaviour”, and that he was “90% blind with no cure”. She spoke of the changes to their lives, before noting that “we are determined to be always moving forward and remaining grateful for the new closeness we have in the absence of sight.”

She went on to ask her followers to share their ‘silver’ lining stories, after sharing her belief that “profoundly good things” cannot happen unless following a bad one.

And it was those same supporters who raced to offer her comfort and well wishes with her heartbreaking new update, each sharing their love and sympathies in her time of loss.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Poh Ling Yeow (@pohlingyeow)

“Oh Poh. Poh Ling Yeow reveals awkward conversation with Prince Charles

Appearing on the Channel 10 reality show I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, MasterChef favourite Poh Ling Yeow shared a story of an awkward meeting she had with Prince Charles at a dinner party.

The 49-year-old chef and TV personality revealed she attended a dinner party where the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall were also in attendance, and she found herself discussing architecture with the heir to the British throne when the topic took a strange turn.

“I got sat next to him, so I made sure I knew what he likes, I know he likes architecture so we mainly bantered about that. But then out of the blue, I decide to use the word ‘dag’, and he goes, ‘Oh, what does that mean?’ “And I thought, oh this is happening.”

Instead of providing a quick definition of the Aussie slang term, Poh kindly provided Charles with an excruciatingly detailed definition of the term’s origins. “I go, ‘It’s kind of the dreadlock of poo that hangs off a sheep’s bum,” she explained. “And he goes, ‘Well, you learn something new every day, don’t you.’”

While she doesn’t mention when this conversation took place, Charles is known for his love of food, and even made a guest appearance on MasterChef in 2018.

Former AFL coach Nathan Buckley also shared a story of a celebrity encounter he had with Paris Hilton, who he said was not particularly polite. The heiress was invited to a BBQ at Buckley’s Melbourne home after his wife Tania gave her a pair of shoes from her South Yarra boutique for Melbourne’s Spring Carnival. Around the same time, Hilton made headlines in Australia for her brief liaison with Australian Idol contestant Rob Mills.

“In the end, she [Hilton] ended up coming over to our little place for a barbecue,” Buckley said, adding, “Rob Mills was waiting outside.” “This is the conversation I had with her. She comes up to me with a full plate of food, in my house, [and says] ‘Fork?’”

“I said, ‘Sorry?’ and she goes, ‘Fork?’ I said, ‘They’re just over there.’ She just walked away and that was the only interaction I had with her.”

Image: Don Arnold/WireImage

MasterChef's Poh finally explains wacky habit

MasterChef's Poh Ling Yeow has captured hearts during the latest season of Masterchef: Back to Win with her endearing habit of watching her food cook in the oven.

She was sadly eliminated on Sunday but during every cook would peer into the oven and many fans thought she was willing her food to cook faster.

She explained the "method to her madness" on Monday night's episode of The Project and admitted she's often asked why she looks into the oven.

“Everyone says – are you trying to make it cook faster?” she told guest panellist Steve Price, who joked she’d turned him into “an oven starer” too.

“There is actually a purpose to it, because I’m watching to see if I need to crank it up,” she explained.

“If I see it’s browning too much, I lower the temperature again. MasterChef favourite Poh Ling Yeow says goodbye in heartbreaking elimination

MasterChef favourite Poh Ling Yeow has been eliminated from the cooking competition in a two-round challenge set with guest judge Phil Wood.

Poh – who came second to Julie Goodwin in MasterChef’s first season in 2009 – failed to place top five in this year’s Back to Win season.

The Sunday night episode kicked off with a challenge to replicate Wood’s potato duchess with shiitake mushrooms and cauliflower.

Poh’s poor performance in round one landed her in the bottom three along with fellow contestants Callum Hann and Reece Hignell.

The three had another face-off in round two, where they were asked to make a new dish out of one or more key ingredients from Wood’s dish.

Poh decided to recreate a ‘redemption’ dish that she failed in a previous cook – culurgiones, a Sardinian potato-stuffed pasta. However, she failed to manage her time and had to abandon her planned burnt butter emulsion last minute.

The prettiest culurgiones we've ever seen 🧡 #MasterChefAU pic.twitter.com/xW7M8cJGFc
— masterchefau (@masterchefau) July 5, 2020

“I think I met the brief, I featured potato, but I’ve also got a very distinct feeling that I haven’t chosen the right dish to do. MasterChef viewers furious over Laura's win on "The Poh Show"

MasterChef fans have erupted in a fit of rage after last night’s immunity challenge result, claiming Poh Ling Yeow was “robbed” by fellow South Aussie Laura Sharrad.

Many viewers called out the judges for favouritism and claimed Laura was handed the win purely because she hadn’t won immunity previously and it made for a good storyline.

It was tough competition, with judges Andy Allen, Jock Zonfrillo and Melissa Leong forced to pick between one “faultless” dish (Laura’s), and one extremely creative dish with a surprising result (Poh’s).

But those watching at home were not happy with the decision.

Given the task to cook with unknown ingredients, it was a random selection of bits and pieces for all three contestants; Callum Hann, Poh Ling Yeow and Laura Sharrad.

But it was Poh who ended up with the most bizarre ingredients of all: Octopus, duck, persimmon, tarragon and yuzu.

But she pulled through as she served a delightful smoked duck breast with ocotopus and yuzu emulsion and charred persimmon but was trumped by Laura’s tasty-looking brown butter roasted Moreton Bay bugs with Jerusalem artichoke and watercress oil.

But while both dishes looked spectacular, viewers accused the judges of overlooking Poh’s creativity to reward Laura the pin simply because it was “her turn to win”.

They 100% picked Laura because she had never won immunity before.
Cooking scrambled eggs may seem like a fairly simple task, but it’s so easy to get it wrong.

Thankfully, MasterChef star Poh Ling Yeow has shared her recipe for the perfect scrambled eggs.

She admits there are “many school of thought on this”, but she insists her way is the best.

“First of all, I’m actually going to put the heat on because one of the most important things about this method is a super hot pan,” Poh said in a MasterChef video.

After slathering some butter on the pan, she was ready to get started.

“What you want to look for is the butter to be foaming like it is,” she said.

“And then it will start to die down a bit and that’s when you know it’s just starting to caramelise. “And we like that, because that’s flavour.”

Other ingredients you will need are eggs, cream, salt and pepper.

“Start off with three eggs if you’re a piggy like me,” she said.

“About a third of a cup of cream. If you want to be super indulgent you can probably do half.”

Before she whisked the eggs, she also added a generous amount of black pepper and salt.

Only once the butter had begun to bubble was Poh happy to put the eggs in.

“When the eggs hit the pan you do want to hear a little sizzle. Just a little one,” she said.

“Right away you should see the edges start to cook.”

This is where Poh revealed the secret to perfect eggs and also mentioned the one thing people often get wrong with this simple dish.

“The trick to this is to resist the temptation to agitate it (the eggs) too much,” she said.

“You want these beautiful silken folds, not a scrambled mess.”

With a laugh, she added: “Even though it’s called scrambled eggs.”

She said there was a fine line between making sure the bottom of the eggs did not caramelise, but also not over mixing the eggs.

Poh recommended to tip the pan so the raw egg mix could coat the rest, adding more flavour.

She then added freshly chopped parsley and parmesan on top.

“So you can see it’s really nice and glossy on top,” she said proudly.

“And that’s how you can make cafe-style eggs at home, in the comfort of your kitchen, in your jocks.”

“It’s not a love triangle!”: MasterChef's Poh Ling Yeow opens up about her very modern love life

Poh Ling Yeow has reached new levels of success following her appearance on the very first season of MasterChef Australia back in 2009.

She’s published multiple cookbooks and many around Australia are familiar with her culinary skills as she regularly appears on MasterChef.

Pho, 46, however has had a very interesting love life.

She married her first husband, Matt Phipps, in 1990 when they were both practicing Mormons.

Things didn’t work out and they divorced after nine years. It was not long after that that Matt married her best friend of 20 years, Sarah Rich.

Poh then went onto marry Jono Bennett, who she met on MasterChef as he was a production assistant.

View this post on Instagram

Reunited with @yorubarecords #berlin

A post shared by Poh Ling Yeow (@pohlingyeow) on Jul 1, 2017 at 1:52am PDT

Following on from moving on with their new partners, the two couples have gone into business together and have opened a café in Adelaide.

Although it might seem weird to many, it’s not weird to all involved.

“He’s my ex-husband. They want everything to be sordid,” Poh said.

It all sounds peaceful now, but at the time it was quite difficult for the pair. They have now come full circle though.

“We’ve just come full circle. It’s quite funny sometimes [because] people don’t know our history. I’ll lose my shit at him … in an ‘ex-wife’ sort of way and people are like 'whoa, you really gave it to him' and I’m like 'yeah, we used to be married' and they’re like 'oh, right, that’s explains a lot.'”

Her husband Jono wasn’t happy with the situation initially either.

He explained to Woman’s Day last year his thoughts on the circumstances.

“It was something we all had to work on essentially. I know it’s very human to be jealous, but it doesn’t make it right.

“There’s a lot of history [between Poh and Matt], so it’s not something that can be taken away. It’s not something that should be.”

Yeow is currently appearing on the latest season of MasterChef Australia as a mentor.

Masterchef Australia is on Channel Ten at 7.30 pm Tuesday to Thursday.

Poh’s vets gave him months to live, so his human took him on a grand trip to make those months count

When vets told Thomas Neil Rodriguez that his 15-year-old dog, Poh, could only be expected to live for another few months, he decided to make sure those last months were special. Rodriguez and his fiance set out from his New York home for a cross-country journey that would make his time with his mate memorable.

Rodriguez set up an Instagram account to document his trip with Poh, who was a former rescue puppy, and it soon caught the attention of dog-lovers around the globe.
